I write this with a sense of great appreciation, as well as much gratitude for the accurate and understandable information I have recently received from Corey Hamil, owner of Aura Senior Placement Solutions. If you are reading this and find yourself in the process of navigating health care for an elderly parent (or any other person you are responsible for), this can be, and I believe often is, an overwhelming and extremely emotional journey.
The truth be told, I am not sure where I would find myself without the thorough, detailed, and prophetic advice I received from Corey Hamil. As fate would have it, my close friend is friends with Corey, and the connection began.
My Mom, concluding her declining health challenges, is now in a Nursing/Rehabilitation Facility, which is what we believe to be her permanent residence. And the challenge is how is this to be financed. Speaking to several different people, from several different departments and/or businesses, there were many options, much confusion, and questions that I often could not understand or coordinate. How dollars were to be spent had several avenues available – and from my perspective I needed to research the best care at the best price, all this involving social security, self-pay, and Medicaid. As our conversations went on, he shared with me that he had been the head administrator over several nursing homes for 30 years. He not only understood how the finances worked, the best way to involve Social Security with Medcaid, etc. but he also understood my mom’s physical and emotional journey. As I explained what we were going through his vast experience assured me that all of this was common and to be expected. That alone was a huge relief.
So I close with this recommendation. If you are walking through the care of a loved one – there are many emotional, financial, and practical questions that need to be answered. For most, we have not walked this way before, so almost everything is a ‘first’. Having someone walk through it with you – someone that has your best interests in mind – not the facilities or the banks – is EVERYTHING.
